Founding History

The Montessori philosophy came to Chattanooga in 1973 when Roberta (Bobbe) Spink started The Montessori World of Children in a small house on Signal Mountain. In 1981, Bobbe and her husband moved the school to a leased building downtown, a location that would allow children from all parts of Chattanooga and the surrounding areas to attend.

The Montessori World of Children became The Montessori School in 2004, when staff and parents worked together to form a non-profit board for the growing school. TMS now includes two toddler classes, four preschool classes, a full elementary (grades 1-6), and middle school (grades 7 and 8), with a total enrollment of 160.

Over the years, the school has come to represent the best of educational innovation with goals that are firmly rooted in a Montessori curriculum and high moral standards, and encompassing visionary branches that reach into our children’s 21st century world. A true sense of community – Head of School, Allison Driver, parents, students, and staff as supporting members of the same team – completes the picture, offering a unique learning experience for all involved.

The Montessori School is dedicated to providing the best and most current education using the Montessori methods.
