Founding History

The Montessori philosophy came to Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1973 in a small house on Signal Mountain. The Montessori World of Children school was started by Roberta (Bobbe) Spink in anticipation of her future children attending. Her first child was born in 1975 and attended the school when he turned 2 years old. In 1981, Bobbe and her husband, Tom, moved the school to a leased building located in downtown Chattanooga. Over the course of the next 30 years the school educated all three of Bobbe & Tomís children. In anticipation of the Spink's retirement they decided to close Montessori World of Children.

The Montessori School was founded in 2004 by a nonprofit board with the help of many dedicated parents to keep the vision of Montessori education alive in Chattanooga. The Montessori School has grown to include 4 toddler classes, 4 preschool classes, a full elementary (grades 1-5), and a middle school (grades 6, 7, and 8), with a total enrollment of 235. The location of the school was specifically chosen so that children from all parts of Chattanooga and the surrounding areas could easily attend. The Montessori School is dedicated to providing the best and most current education using the Montessori method. Each year the school undergoes an evaluation process involving all areas so that we may update programs and services.

The school is open daily from 7:15-5:45. Each school year begins in August and ends in May. Each classroom is directed by a trained, experienced teacher and assistant.

Over the years, the school has come to represent the best of educational innovation with its goals firmly rooted in a Montessori curriculum and high moral standards, but with visionary branches reaching into our children's 21st century world. A true sense of community - parents, students, and staff as supporting members of the same team - completes the picture, offering a unique learning experience for all involved.
